National Research Projects

Division of Electronics Engineering

During 2012-2016, the overall funding received by the Electrical Engineering division in EECS at PKU was around 0.85 billion RMB. The annual funding is around 0.2 billion RMB during 2012-2015 (the last 4 years in the twelfth 5-year supporting period in China), while in 2016, the funding was slightly decreased as the funding policy in China had a significant change in the first year of the thirteenth 5-year supporting period and most grant openings were delayed. The average funding received annually by a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering division was around 1.03M RMB/year, which supported all research activities.

Selected major projects undertaken by the faculty in EE at PKU are listed below, which includes 5 National Basic Research Programs of China (National 973 Program), 2 National Key Scientific and Technological Projects, 1 Major Research plan of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Integration Program) and 2 Creative Research Groups supported by NSFC. The project “process, device and circuit modeling and simulation for 16 nm or below node” is a main 973 program (total budget is more than 89M RMB) which was granted only to those have very important impacts on the technology development of the country. Meanwhile, the Creative Research Group from NSFC mainly supports a small group of scientists (usually 6) on a focused topic to carry out fundamental research at a more freedom mode. The large national funding received by the Electrical Engineering division in EECS at PKU indicated research groups here are the key intelligence tanks for the development of electrical engineering in China.

Division of Computer Science

During 2012-2016, the overall funding received by the faculty in Computer Science was around 0.54 billion RMB. Selected major projects undertaken by the Computer Science in EECS of PKU are listed below, which included 2 Creative Research Groups supported by NSFC and 2 projects from Enterprise. Figure 3-9 shows the breakdown of received funding according to funding agencies in 2012-2016 in the Computer Science, which indicates that about 1/3 grants of the Computer Science came from Natural Science Foundation of China, which support fundamental research; 1/3 from the Ministry of Science and Technology, which support research for national development, and 1/3 grants came from the Enterprise. Nearly every faculty member in Computer Science has received or is running at least one NSFC project, which further demonstrated the strong fundamental research capability of Computer Science. The average funding for a faculty member is around 800k RMB/year, which supports all research activities.
