About

Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Peking University! We are the largest school at Peking University with more than 390 faculty and staff members, 1300 undergraduate students, as well as 1300 Master/Ph.D. students.

The academic discipline of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University has a long history that dates back to the 1950s. In 1958, the Department of Radio Electronics, subsequently renamed the Department of Electronics in 1996, was established, based on the two Divisions of Radio Physics and Electronic Physics affiliated to the Department of Physics. In 1978, the Department of Computer Science and Technology was formally established. Its origin can be traced back to the Programming Specialty affiliated to the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics since 1957. In 1985, the Institute of Microelectronics was founded, the origin of which can extend to the Semiconductor Physics Specialty also affiliated to the Department of Physics since 1956. The same year saw the official establishment of the Center for Information Science by faculty from ten related departments to promote interdisciplinary research. For the purpose of further strengthening our educational and research abilities, these four units above were reorganized into the School of EECS in 2002.

The school of EECS is proud of its world-class faculty who conduct outstanding teaching and cutting-edge research. As the team grows, we have seen an increasing number of not only leading senior scholars who have been renowned in their respective fields, but also young scholars who have shown great academic potential, specifically including 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 3 Distinguished Professors of the Recruitment Program for Innovative Talents, 7 Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 11 Distinguished Professors of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 16 winners of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. In addition, our faculty members are actively involved in international initiatives, such as conference chairs, journal editors and paper reviewers.

Nurturing leading professionals with an international outlook is one of our top goals. The School of EECS offers undergraduate/postgraduate programs in the areas of Computer Science and Technology, Electronics Science and Technology, Microelectronics, and Machine Intelligence. We give students flexibility in choosing their majors, and provide opportunities for custom-tailored education. Besides, the School has sought to facilitate learning and development through academic contests, research funding programs and international exchange programs. According to the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject, we ranked 16th and 22nd at “Computer Science and Information Systems” and “Electrical and Electronic Engineering”, respectively.

The School of EECS has undertaken extensive research responsibilities with respect to basic research, as well as high-tech development and transformation. Since 2002, EECS has been in charge of more than 5300 research projects at both national and provincial levels. So far, EECS has been granted 25 State Science and Technology Awards. Two of EECS’ research findings are selected as the “China Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progresses”. The School has received a total of about 3 billion RMB research funding. This not only helps to drive further progress within the School of EECS itself, but also helps to further foster interdisciplinary cooperation between EECS and other academic and/or industrial organizations, domestic and overseas.

During the past 15 years, both faculty and students at the School of EECS have made remarkable achievements which have profound influence worldwide. The School will continue its efforts to nurture young talents, to pursue excellence in education, and to take the lead in research by exploring new frontiers. We look forward to building stronger relationships with our alumni, partners and friends all over the world. Last but not the least, we welcome and value your input, suggestions and comments.

Thank you!
