The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University was founded in September, 2002. The school is incorporated by the original Department of Electronics, Department of Computer Science, Center for Information Science and Institute of Microelectronics. The school covers four first level subjects, including computer science and technology, electronics science and technology, information and communication engineering and physics and eleven second level subjects. The school has five national key subjects such as software science and theory, three national key laboratories, and several joint laboratories cooperated with many world-famous companies or organizations, thus, the school is rich in resources for scientific researches. In addition, the academic level of the faculty members in teaching and researching is high. There are three Academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, one Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, three CKSP (Cheung Kong Scholar Program) Professors, two grantees of Fund for Excellence in Scientific Researches by Youth, three leading scientists for 973 Program, and three members of the Committee of Experts in the National 863 Program. Among our staff, there is one winning the title of Cross-Century Talent awarded by the Ministry of Education, 44 tutors of doctoral candidates, 60 professors, and 99 associate professors. Currently, the school had 1272 undergraduate students, 771 postgraduate students and 285 doctoral candidates.
Peking University began to do researches into Information Science earlier than any other university or institute in China and developed rapidly from 1958 on. The teachers and researchers working in this field at Peking University do well in mathematics, physics and engineering, so they have high academic level and strong ability to create. In the past 50 years, Peking University achieved a lot in Physical Electronics, Quantum Electronics, Satellites, Telecommunication, Computer Science, Microelectronics, Acoustics and Signal Processing. Some of the achievements have benefited the national economy, enhanced the quality of living and changed the way of living and working. For instance, we established the first computer based on large-scale integrated circuits in China in the 1970s, developed and put into practice the system of satellite communication and telecommunication in the 1980s, achieved much in Nanoelectronics, Quantum Electronics, and microelectronics in the 1990s, and initiated the automatic system of fingerprint recognition based on the advanced method of calculating. The academic level of the school of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University reflects the academic level of China to a large degree with some of the achievements being famous all over the world. Up to now, ten thousand or so students graduated from the school of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University, which has contributed a lot to the cultivation of the talents in this field in China.
